ROOM OF HER OWN: BALLAD OF RUTH COXE

THE FLORENCE GRISWOLD MUSEUM, OLD LYME, CT 2018

Room Of Her Own: Ballad of Ruth Coxe takes themes of identity and social consciousness to present an intimate portrait of Ruth Ann Brown Coxe, a complex and unconventional figure who clashed with others on politics, womanhood, and religion. This documentary project encompassed several visits to the home of Ruth Coxe, photographing Coxe in the eccentric and cluttered environment of her home, drawing parallels between the house and the personality of its occupant. Following Coxe’s death, I revisited the home “with Ruth as its soul” to photograph a new generation of women, What emerges is a kind of collective portrait of a pioneer woman, a feminist in her own right, and perhaps someone best understood in recollection.
